I’m an award-winning Philosophy Professor and Leadership & Writing Coach for academics…
During my time as a university professor, I:
→ Brought in over a million dollars in external funding and grants.
→ Published articles and book chapters.
→ Served as director of a Center for Teaching and Learning.
→ Chaired a department and directed a program.
→ Got tenure and promotion to full professor.
→ Served on the university’s tenure and promotion committee.
→ Submitted my book manuscript to the publisher…
And then my twins were born. After maternity leave I began a cross-border commute that took 9 hours each week and tried to keep up with publishing. I even got promoted to Full Professor.
I thought everything was going great, until I found myself crying on the way to work every day for a whole semester, and then got hit with debilitating migraines. This was burnout, and it was unsustainable.
That’s when I doubled down on my mindfulness practice, sought support, recovered, and discovered the bliss of balance. I published more (with way less angst and struggle), won awards, got invited to give keynotes, served and continue to serve on the boards of several journals and book series, and found joy in my career again.
I’m now Professor Emerita, have a thriving coaching practice, teach part time, and am Director of Humanities for the International Society for Contemplative Research and Co-Editor of the ASIANetwork Book Series with Lever Press.
